Loft living is often associated with soaring ceilings, open-concept layouts, and industrial elements like exposed ductwork, concrete floors, and steel accents. While these architectural features create a striking modern aesthetic, they can sometimes feel cold or impersonal. In the Conover Lofts project in Kansas City’s River Market area, my goal as the interior designer and interior stylist was to create a warm, inviting, and livable space within this quintessential urban setting.

Collaborating with David Dowell of El Dorado Architecture, whose design set the stage for the loft’s modern structure, and photographer Matt McFarland, who captured its essence, I infused the interiors with warmth through intentional styling, thoughtful materials, and a curated blend of textures. The result is a home that balances urban edge with understated elegance and comfort.

Bringing Warmth to the Conover Lofts

For this project, we collaborated with David Dowell of El Dorado Architecture, who developed the original loft structure, and Matt McFarland, whose photography beautifully captures the space. The Conover Lofts project is a prime example of how intentional interior design can transform an urban loft into a comfortable, livable home.

Layered Textiles for a Cozy Feel

One of the easiest ways to soften a modern loft is through layered textiles. In the living area, we incorporated:

  • A deep rust-hued area rug to anchor the space and contrast against the concrete floors.

  • Plush, neutral-toned sofas with textured throw pillows and blankets to create warmth and dimension.

  • A low-profile coffee table, styled with books, ceramics, and fresh florals, adding a lived-in elegance.

By combining soft, inviting textures with the loft’s strong architectural lines, we struck the perfect balance between industrial minimalism and cozy sophistication.

Soft, Ambient Lighting for a Warm Glow

Lighting design is crucial in urban loft interiors, where large windows provide natural light during the day, but expansive ceilings can create a cooler atmosphere at night. To introduce warmth and depth, we used:

✔ Globe-shaped lamps that diffuse soft, ambient light.

✔ Recessed and track lighting to highlight architectural features.

✔ Strategic accent lighting in the dressing and bath areas, making them feel intimate and inviting.

A Relaxing, Open-Concept Dressing & Bathing Retreat

Lofts often feature open layouts, and the Conover Lofts seamlessly integrates a dressing area and spa-like bath. To make this space feel inviting and luxurious, we:

✔ Used soft shag rugs and woven textiles to create a plush underfoot experience.

✔ Styled with wardrobe pieces elements, making the space feel personal & editorial-worthy.

✔ Introduced spa-inspired elements, including warm lighting, organic textures, and plush towels, ensuring the bath area feels serene and indulgent.

This area proves that open-concept loft living can be functional and elegant, without sacrificing comfort.
